Yahrzeit Lantern and Cups

The art of enameling is similar to both oil painting and stained glass. Many layers of finely ground and washed transparent colored glass are applied and fired on carefully prepared metal surfaces. With each repeated application of colors and high firing in the kiln, the clarity and gem like luster of the glass increases. Delicate painting with very fine glass suspended in oil is used to add details and text. Metal foils of silver and gold are often applied in the early firings to increase the reflectivity of light from beneath the surface, to add texture, detail, and subtle variations in the colors. The scgraffito technique is used to produce drawing and text in the layers over foils.
